News: Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge–Preis für unkonventionelle Kunstvermittlung 2009 an Peter Weibel

Der Künstler, Kurator und Medientheoretiker Peter Weibel erhält den „Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge-Preis für unkonventionelle Kunstvermittlung“ der Stiftung Preußische Seehandlung.

Der Preis zeichnet Persönlichkeiten aus, die als Künstler oder als Anstifter die Kunst und Kultur im deutschsprachigen Raum auf außergewöhnliche Weise bereichert und geprägt haben. Das Preisgeld in Höhe von 10.000 Euro soll neue Aufgaben und Werke des Preisträgers möglich machen.

Peter Weibel, 1944 in Odessa geboren, studierte Literatur, Medizin, Logik, Philosophie sowie Filmästhetik in Paris und Wien und promovierte über mathematische Logik. Gastprofessuren führten ihn u.a. nach Halifax und New York, er war künstlerischer Leiter der Ars Electronica, des Landesmuseums in Graz und 2008 der Biennale von Sevilla, Direktor des Instituts für Neue Medien an der Städelschule und Professor für visuelle Mediengestaltung in Wien, außerdem sechs Jahre lang Österreichs Kommissär der Biennale von Venedig. Seit 1999 leitet er das Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie (ZKM) in Karlsruhe.

Die Entscheidung über die Preisvergabe 2009 geht auf den Preisjuror Ulrich Eckhardt zurück, der seine Wahl u.a. so begründet:
Peter Weibel ist Anstifter und Pionier neuer Erscheinungsformen der bildenden Kunst – im kreativen Sinne ein Querdenker – nicht nur als Theoretiker und Organisator, sondern auch als eigenständiger Künstler. Mit seinen zahllosen Vorträgen und Publikationen zur Theorie und Geschichte der Medien und mit seiner weltweiten Tätigkeit als Kurator vertritt er die interdisziplinäre Erweiterung der Künste und die Integration wissenschaftlicher Arbeit (Technik und Natur) in die Kunstvermittlung. Sein künstlerischer Weg führte ihn von der Wiener Aktionskunst über das amerikanische Expanded Cinema zur Videoinstallation, seine Werkliste umfasst Arbeiten aus den Bereichen Concept Art, Performance, Experimentalfilm, Video und Computerkunst. Seine starke, weit über den deutschsprachigen Raum hinaus reichende Reputation als Künstler wie als Kunstvermittler basiert auf einer universellen Perspektive zu allen Künsten, auf seiner unermüdlichen Präsenz, seiner Lust am Experiment, seiner forschenden Neugier und einer ausgeprägten Fähigkeit zur Animation.

Der Preis wird am 27. Februar 2009 in der Berlinischen Galerie. Landesmuseum für Moderne Kunst, Photographie und Architektur verliehen.
