Die Ausstellung in der Graphischen Sammlung des Ständel Museum Frankfurt geht vom 6. März - 7. Juni 2009.
Die Graphische Sammlung im Städel Museum zeigt vom 6. März bis 7. Juni 2009 eine Ausstellung, die sich an dem besonders umstrittenen Beispiel von Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475–1564) mit der Frage der Zuschreibung von Altmeisterzeichnungen beschäftigt. Michelangelo hat neben seinen weltberühmten Skulpturen, Fresken und Bauwerken eine große Anzahl von Zeichnungen geschaffen, die zu seinen Lebzeiten sehr bewundert wurden. Da er sie nie signiert hat und viele kurz vor seinem Tod verbrannte, ist heute bei vielen erhaltenen Blättern nicht einfach zu bestimmen, ob sie tatsächlich eigenhändig sind oder ob es sich um Kopien oder Nachahmungen anderer Künstler handelt. Anlass für die Ausstellung bildet eine Zeichnung in der Graphischen Sammlung des Städel Museums, deren Zuschreibung an Michelangelo in der Vergangenheit kontrovers diskutiert wurde. Zuletzt wurde sie von einigen Experten erneut Michelangelo zugeschrieben. Anhand ausgewählter Beispiele – darunter kostbare Leihgaben aus den Sammlungen des British Museum, London, der Royal Collection, Windsor, der Casa Buonarroti, Florenz – bietet die Ausstellung verschiedene Möglichkeiten des unmittelbaren visuellen Vergleichs, um den Besuchern Gelegenheit zu einer eigenen Auseinandersetzung mit dieser Frage vor originalen Werken zu geben.
Die Ausstellung „Michelangelo. Zeichnungen und Zuschreibungen“ wird von der Hannelore Krempa Stiftung gefördert.
Das Blatt aus der Sammlung des Städel Museums, die „Grotesken Köpfe und weitere Studien“, wurde im 19. Jahrhundert als Werk Michelangelos erworben, ihm seitdem zu- oder teilweise zu-, um 1980 jedoch abgeschrieben. Da verschiedene Experten in den letzten Jahren mehrfach die Meinung äußerten, es handle sich hier doch um ein eigenhändiges Werk Michelangelos, entstand der Plan für eine Ausstellung, die sich nicht darauf beschränken sollte, das in Frage stehende Blatt zu behandeln, sondern sich allgemeiner dem Problem des „Zuschreibens“ zu widmen. Dabei gilt es zu betonen, dass es sich bei den „Grotesken Köpfen“ nicht um eine „Neuentdeckung“, sondern um die erneute Zuschreibung eines seit Langem bekannten Blattes handelt.
Die Graphische Sammlung im Städel Museum besitzt eine herausragende Sammlung von Zeichnungen der italienischen Renaissance, die zu den besten in Deutschland gehört. Sie wurde vor allem von dem großen Kenner Johann David Passavant (1787–1861) aufgebaut, der von 1840 bis zu seinem Tod als Inspektor der Galerie die Sammlungen des Städel um viele wertvolle Erwerbungen bereichert hat. Der nazarenische Maler Passavant war ein Spezialist, was Raffael betraf, dessen Zeichnungen heute zu den Spitzenstücken der Städel’schen Sammlung zählen. Beim Ankauf von Werken Michelangelos bewies Passavant jedoch eine weniger glückliche Hand; es gelangen ihm nur wenige, nicht zweifelsfreie Erwerbungen, weshalb das Blatt der „Grotesken Köpfe“ in Frankfurt verhältnismäßig wenig beachtet blieb.
Die Ausstellung umfasst 24 Werke. Zwölf – teilweise doppelseitige – Zeichnungen und zwei Briefe sind (mit der in dieser Frage möglichen Wahrscheinlichkeit) ganz oder teilweise eigenhändige Arbeiten Michelangelos. Die anderen Werke sind Vergleichsbeispiele, zum Teil aus der Sammlung des Städel Museums. Unter den Michelangelo-Zeichnungen befinden sich weltbekannte Meisterwerke wie der „Ideale Frauenkopf“, die „Auferstehung“ oder das Studienblatt mit der Ermahnung an Antonio Mini.
Die Ausstellung ist in sieben Kapitel unterteilt. Im ersten geht es um einen Vergleich einer Zeichnung Michelangelos mit der Darstellung des „Lazarus“ mit einer seines Freundes, des Malers Sebastiano del Piombo. Letztere stammt aus der Sammlung des Städel Museums. Beide Zeichnungen entstanden für dasselbe Gemälde, die von Sebastiano ausgeführte „Auferweckung des Lazarus“ (heute in der National Gallery, London). Da sich Sebastiano in einer Konkurrenzsituation zu Michelangelos größtem Rivalen, Raffael, befand, unterstützte Michelangelo seinen Freund mit Entwurfszeichnungen. Diese sind von der Forschung teilweise für Werke Sebastianos gehalten worden. In der Ausstellung ist es möglich, die unter- schiedliche Zeichenweise des venezianischen Malers Sebastiano und des Florentiner Bildhauers Michelangelo unmittelbar zu vergleichen.
Schon in der „Lazarus“-Zeichnung werden die wichtigsten Eigenschaften des zeichnerischen Stils Michelange- los deutlich: Er „modelliert“ beim Zeichnen, das heißt, er versucht nicht so sehr unterschiedliche Material- oder Flächenwirkungen zu erzeugen, wie es Maler gerne tun, sondern interessiert sich stärker für Dreidimen- sionalität und die Interaktion von Körper und Raum; er ist sehr erfinderisch, vor allem was ausdrucksvolle Körperhaltungen angeht, er baut Körper von innen, von ihrer Anatomie her, auf und legt seine Zeichnungen gerne in „Schichten“ an, indem er mit ganz leichten Strichen anfängt und das Motiv dann mit immer stärker gesetzten Akzenten ausarbeitet. Er zeichnet zügig und energisch.
Ein nächstes Kapitel zeigt Blätter, auf denen Zeichnungen Michelangelos von Schülern nachgeahmt wurden. Man kann bei aufmerksamer Betrachtung verschiedene „Hände“ unterscheiden und manchmal auf faszinie- rende Weise rekonstruieren, wie ein bezeichnetes Blatt nach und nach in einem „Dialog“ zwischen Meister und Schüler entstanden ist. In diesem Kontext geht es auch um die Frage, wer Michelangelos Schüler waren. Es handelte sich um seine Hausgehilfen und einige Jünglinge aus gut situierten Familien; keiner von ihnen wurde, soweit man weiß, später je mit eigenständigen Kunstwerken bekannt.
Das Kapitel der „Idealen Köpfe“ stellt nach den oft schnellen und andeutenden Skizzen aus der Lehrer-und- Schüler-Situation das andere Extrem der Zeichenkunst Michelangelos vor: akribisch ausgeführte Meister- zeichnungen, die er oft als persönliche Geschenke angefertigt hat und die unter den Sammlern und Kennern seiner Zeit hoch begehrt waren. Das Problem, das sich hier für die Zuschreibung stellt, ist, woran man die Qualität einer nicht schnell und virtuos, sondern langsam und sorgfältig ausgeführten Zeichnung erkennen kann. Vergleiche mit einer frühen Kopie und einem ebenfalls nur als Kopie erhaltenen Gegenstück lassen die ungewöhnlich hohe Qualität des „Idealen Frauenkopfes“ aus dem British Museum erkennen, auf die sich die Zuschreibung dieses Blattes stützt.
Nach den „Idealen Köpfen“ geht es um ihr Gegenteil, die Hässlichkeit, mit der sich Michelangelo in den phantasievollen Erfindungen seiner „Grotesken Köpfe“ beschäftigt hat. Hier werden dem oben erwähnten Frankfurter Blatt der „Grotesken Köpfe“ verschiedene Vergleichsbeispiele aus anderen Sammlungen gegenübergestellt und Fragen seiner Eigenhändigkeit diskutiert. Von großer Bedeutung ist dabei die in den vorherigen Kapiteln schon angesprochene Beobachtung, dass Michelangelo, je nachdem, welchen Zweck er mit einer Zeichnung verfolgte, auf sehr unterschiedliche Weise gezeichnet hat (schnell, langsam, virtuos, sorgfältig, flüchtig etc.), auch wenn die grundsätzlichen Charakteristika sich immer wiederfinden (modellie- rendes Zeichnen, schichtweises Zeichnen, anatomisches Interesse, Denken vom inneren Aufbau her, Erfindungsreichtum).
Die Graphische Sammlung im Städel Museum besitzt zwei frühe, sehr hochwertige Kopien nach Zeichnun- gen Michelangelos, deren Originale als Leihgaben des British Museum in der Ausstellung zu sehen sind, die „Auferstehung Christi“ und der „Auferstandene“. Der Vergleich von Original und Kopie in diesen beiden Fällen erlaubt es, die hohe Qualität der Originale nachzuvollziehen, aber auch die kleinen Veränderungen in den Kopien als „Redaktion“ der Kopisten zu verstehen.
Von keinem anderen Künstler der italienischen Renaissance sind so viele schriftliche Zeugnisse überliefert wie von Michelangelo. Zwei Briefe stellen in der Ausstellung die graphische Qualität seiner Handschrift vor und dokumentieren inhaltlich zugleich seine Auffassung von der Bedeutung des Zeichnens und von seinem Status als Künstler.
Das letzte Kapitel versucht, ein Blatt von unbekannter Hand, das Johann David Passavant 1850 irrtümlich als Original von Michelangelo für das Städel Museum erworben hat, anhand von zwei Vergleichsbeispielen einem anderen Künstler, dem Miniaturisten Giulio Clovio (1498–1568), zuzuschreiben.
Die Ausstellung lädt zum intensiven Schauen ein und bietet den Besuchern die Möglichkeit, vor den Originalen Feinheiten, Unterschiede und Besonderheiten zu erkennen und die „Spuren“ eines Gedankenpro- zesses, der vor fast fünfhundert Jahren stattgefunden hat, zu „lesen“. Um diese visuellen Erlebnisse zu erleichtern, sind den einzelnen Abteilungen der Ausstellung erklärende und hinweisende Texte, teilweise mit zusätzlichen Vergleichsabbildungen, mitgegeben.
Der Katalog resümiert die Forschungsgeschichte zu den Zeichnungen Michelangelos und erläutert, welche Argumente und Anhaltspunkte bei der Zuschreibung einer Zeichnung neben Stil und Qualität hilfreich sein können. Dazu zählen zum Beispiel die genaue Bestimmung der Technik, die Provenienz der Blätter, eventuell vorhandene Wasserzeichen, die behandelten Themen, Aufschriften u. a. m. In größtmöglicher Ausführlich- keit gibt der Katalog die Argumentation für oder gegen die Eigenhändigkeit der ausgestellten Blätter wieder.

The response to national disaster is noble but it’s a damn shame that so many people take advantage of the negative situations.
I mean everytime there is an earthquake, a flood, an oil spill - there’s always a group of heartless people who rip off tax payers.
